The Choir was founded in 1964 by Graham Smallbone, Director of Music at Dean Close School, Cheltenham.

We meet on Wednesday evenings during term-time, at Cheltenham College Preparatory School's music department*, to rehearse for at least three concerts a year in Cheltenham in November/December, March/April, and June/July.  The choir aims to tackle a wide and varied repertoire including lesser known choral works, often unaccompanied, with some concerts being joined by organ/harpsichord or with a small orchestra. A donation from the proceeds raised at each concert is given to a local Charity. In 2009 the Choir was delighted to be awarded The Cheltenham Opera Group Cup by Cheltenham Arts Council for enterprise and innovation in music making.

We frequently programme works by West of England composers in our concerts, alongside well-known and more recherché works from the European canon including music from Renaissance times to the present day.

Musica Vera Camerata

Over the past few years flexible ensembles consisting of a core of talented players from orchestras in Gloucestershire, as well as further afield, have come together to accompany our concerts.  It was therefore decided that for our concert in March 2013 our orchestra should be given the name Musica Vera Camerata.  Our aim is to issue a first call to the members of this core, when programmes demand an instrumental ensemble, which usually happens at least once a year.
